STATEMENT:

I used real cherry blossom petals in the above painting, having pressed them after they fell from the trees in our area. In the ghost bird, I used ginko leaves, but then removed them after they left a ghostly imprint which I preferred. Ghost dogs came about following the passing of our old dog, Nora, and our adoption of puppy, Nuala: I painted a dog which was a combination likeness of the two. Then I made several more paintings of other ghost dogs.

But due to current concerns about our global loss of honey bees and other species, I began the Garden Variety series, as my garden filled with new occupants and visitors. I made them by layering Italian decorative and/or origami paper into wax encaustic on a wood panel, then painting in oils on top. The ghostly tree branches, nests, thickets, holes, or bird houses, hint at loss of abode or habitat.

In Bird #1 & Bird House, I used real bird feathers, which were given to me by a bird-keeping neighbor*, plus words cut from newspaper, which I applied over goldleaf on the miniature bird house--and it is difficult to see them, but there are two real (unfertilized) finch eggs inside its tiny doorway. (*Thank you, John!)
